Guess who's coming to the PCRA Rodeo in 2017?
You guessed it! Leon Coffee
"Oh my Lord, have I seen changes," says Leon Coffee, a rodeo legend. He laughs and shakes his head. When he started his professional career in 1973, the only credentials he needed were toughness and a taste for adrenaline.
Rodeoing, he says, "started as something to do." He was the "littlest in the herd" of a family of five siblings. As a kid, he rode bucking horses in "little britches" youth rodeos and worked his way up from there.
After a few years of bull riding, he was asked to fill in for a bullfighter at a high school rodeo. Bullfighters are the men who distract the furious animal long enough to let the bucked-off rider slip to safety.
"It became an obsession," he says. "I'm an adrenaline junkie. This is as big an adrenaline rush as you can get. You've got 1,800 pounds of beast with baseball bats sticking out of the side of his head and he wants to take you off the face of this earth."
These days he watches the bull riding from a slightly safer place: the inside of a barrel. Now, Coffee is the barrelman, or clown, for the Houston Rodeo. Decked out in whimsical shirts and face paint, he serves as comic relief during lulls in the action.
